about

""Opening Night," which takes its title from the John Cassavetes film of the same name, begins with a cacophony of instruments and operatic vocals and culminates with strings and what can only be described as futuristic whale noises. In the space between lies a psychedelic journey of multiple identities as told by Gertler in her transporting, angelic soprano, backed by layers of organs, girl-group harmonies, strings, brass and percussion. The song is by turns exotic and familiar, evoking modern envelope-pushers like Animal Collective, as well as the progressive influence of early Genesis and nascent Pink Floyd. Such is the peculiar and exciting alchemy of the Universal Thump's accessible but avant-garde pop." - Elizabeth Nelson, NPR 'Song of the Day'

Track Name: Honey Beat
New day begun,
We wake before the sun
You lie next to me
Can you explain
Where did you come from

Honey beat
You're out of the blue
This happiness
Is more than I'm used to

I used to see
You in different situations
As I made it through
Tiny glimpses were the way I knew
How much I loved you

Honey beat
You're out of the blue
This happiness
Is more than I'm used to
Honey, you were slow to arrive
Now you're closer I delight.
Track Name: To the Border (Wild Raspberries)
Pull me close to your ear
These are words I only
Want you to hear
There's enough space
Between us now.
Climbing over the rocks
With you
I was thinking
You were running
Ahead to find
A way for us to avoid the tide
That cut us off from shore

We were heading to the border
Looking for a tail in the water
Chasing beauty down
Now you're here with me
Your landscape is a mystery

I won't be afraid
Of how much I feel
While I hold you
I could also let you leave
If you come back to me.
Track Name: Opening Night
She came to me in a dream
But I'll never remember
Her melody.
She was onstage
And the audience
Was going wild.
And it seemed like
Something new.
And she said,

"If you let me go,
I will go with it.
Take me from this dream
To reality. And if
you remember my melody
You will never cry again."

It was a rainy night
A car too fast in the dark
A split second in time
Her life was gone.

Now I float up to the sky
And it seems I can fly
Like I'm in a dream.
Don't be afraid,
Now I have been set free
And I'm onto something new

"If you let me go,
I will go with it.
Take me from this dream
To reality. And if
you remember my melody
You will never cry again."
Track Name: The Last Time
I thought you looked familiar
You said we'd met before
Was it outside the city walls
Shortly after we had won the war?
See pillows scattered on the floor
Unfolding arms you turned the key
And took me in to taste the wine

That was the last time we made love
We left the music on and rose above
That was the last time I made love
We left the music on and rose above

You thought the town would hold us in
My hands retraced the wall
The soldiers shaking, down the burning hall
But we were already gone.
